A long time ago, during the Sengoku period, the daimyo Kagemitsu Daigō made a pact with the 48 demons of hell. The daimyo asked the demons to make him the ruler of all the lands, and in return, he would allow them to roam his grounds, free to commit any atrocities they might wish to do. The demons, however, asked him for a sacrifice in return, a blood sacrifice to forge a pact. So, the demons took the daimyo’s unborn infant as a sacrifice. After the daimyo became the lord, his wife gave birth to the sacrificed infant, a boy with no face, no limbs, and a body mangled like a cloth, a boy named Hyakkimaru.

Unable to see the state of her child and knowing very well that there was no life for him, the young woman abandoned her baby on the river. However, Hyakkimaru’s fate wasn’t sealed yet. The young boy is found by  Jukai-sensei, who adopts the child and heals him with ancient magic by using the organs and limbs of children who had died during the war.

As Hyakkimaru grows up, he gets more accustomed to his body which is now nearly invincible with the help of the prosthetics and healing magic of Jukai Sensei. The young man now takes it upon himself to find and kill all the 48 demons to not only get his body back but also to rid the lands of the evil once and for all, and it is on this journey that he meets a young thief named Dororo.
